Two World Champions.
IJKA Ireland ……. 2 World Champions ……. at the IJKA World Open Karate Championships in Bulgaria ……….
Well done to sensei Brian Toomey who won the gold in the master’s kata, a silver in both the senior men’s kata and the team kata, and a bronze in the senior men’s kata and the team kata, and to sensei Martin Sheehan, Kildorrery Karate Club, who took gold in both the senior men’s heavyweight kumite and the open weight kumite.
The senior kumite team took second spot on the podium with 5 silver medals, and the mixed team took 3 silver medals in the kumite final. We had a clean sweep in the men’s individual open weight kumite category with Martin Sheehan taking gold, Joe Hunter the silver, and Ross Daly the bronze ……… a whole new meaning to ” The fighting Irish “.
The team kata event yielded another 3 bronze medals. Craig Dempsey won the bronze in the individual kata, and a great display saw Becca Palmer take the bronze in the ladies u 21 individual kata.
This is a fantastic result and these athletes must be commended for their dedication and discipline and they are great ambassadors for the sport. Thanks to all who helped out with the squad training, a special thanks to sensei P.J. Moloney ( himself a former world kumite champion ) who looked after the kumite discipline, and sensei Brian Toomey who prepared the team for the kata discipline.
Well done all. Osu!
